Very handy but would be even better if the gauge were in sts per 10cm as well as in inches. In the metric world thats how its done. Muddlesknit.

Just in time for post-Christmas yarn sales, your timing on this is brilliant! I have been carrying around the pamphlet version of Handy for months, and it is so great to now have it at my fingertips on iPhone. A nice feature is when it brings up your yarn requirements you can easily switch from yards to metres on the same screen. Straightforward to use, nice appearance, great price. What would make this a 5-star app is the addition of a calculator: if you could enter in the yardage on the ball band and it calculated the number of balls to buy for a project. Then it would be truly a one-stop app. Looking forward to this update...
I wasnt going to bother with this app since I already have another yarn usage app. But this little app is quite nice. I like that you can adjust the gauge and the yardage appears on the screen without having to hit submit. This way you can play with gauge and easily see the yardage without any back-and-forth. Yardage for sweaters (for example) ranges a lot depending on stitch pattern, cables, necklines etc. The yardage given gives just a 10% buffer (I think thats what the app description said), so keep those design decisions in mind when considering yardage requirements. I thought it would be nice to have the app consider some of those factors, but where to draw the line? I realize its a slippery slope. Overall, this is a very nice app for knitters, well worth the cost.
I really like this app. I own a knitting store & I used the old-skool paper version for 9 years before I got an iGadget, and I also use Ann Budds books for reference too. The only thing the app needs are the in-between gauges: 3.5, 4.5, 5.5, 6.5 sts/inch. So many standardized yarn sizes fall in the middle gauge, and I still have to use a calculator to figure out the final yardage. Please fix!
Best knitting app ever! Wonderful information.
Every knitter needs this app.
Incredibly useful and easy-to-use. Great.
Finally an app that will be of use in a yarn store. How many times have we all seen a gorgeous yarn but didnt know how much to buy for a project. The only improvement I could think of would be to add a category for sleeveless sweaters.
Useful, quick and easy to use.
Indispensable for any serious knitter
Ann Budd is a knitters knitter. She distills our art to the essence of form, simplicity, and function. She will always be first in my queue.
this app is awesome. i always have my iphone with me at the yarn shop, and now i can easily look up my yarn needs.
Great app, but I would love to see an update that calculates yardage for afghans!
this app is so simplistic that I cant imagine it offering anything to anyone.
For 99 cents I feel this is a good buy. This app is so Ann Budd, straight forward with no fluff. I can already see this as coming in so handy when Im in a yarn store and fall in love with a yarn and never know how much to get for a project, until now of course. Someone elses suggestion about adding a new category for afghans is a great idea and then I would give it 5 stars.
This is a wonderful application. I do wish the knitting version had afghans like the crochet application.
You can find this information on the web for FREE. Do Not Waste Your Money. This app is not helpful at all.
What a disappointment! Women sizes only go to medium. Youre out of luck if youre not a small or a medium woman. I feel ripped off as this wont work for me at all!
Well worth the small price. Essential reference for knitters needing to calculate yardage or who cannot remember which needles are needed for which size of yarn. Provides standard weights for yarns with recommended needle size and stitches per inch. Can be set to metric measures in centimeters/ meters or inches/yards. Recommends required yardage for several project types using chest size and gauge for the calculation.
Just purchased, and Im very pleased! Other reviewers are wrong — I dont know what size ranges they were looking for — but my guess is that the app works for sizes up to a womans 2X or a mans XL. I typically wear an extra-large in sweaters, and only need a 48-inch sweater for 4 inches of ease. The app will calculate yardage for sweaters up to a 52-inch chest measurement. Other projects include scarves, socks, gloves, mittens, vests and hats. Also includes typical gauge for different weights of yarn. Very helpful!
